Les Fêtes de la Mer

Two days celebrating the sea and its traditions.

On 14 and 15 August in Arcachon, the whole town comes together to pay homage to the sea and seafarers.

The festivities start on the 14th with a giant picnic on the seafront. More than 3 000 guests are expected for a musical evening to the sound of the bands. The only rule: you must wear the famous yellow scarf, symbol of the Fêtes de la Mer.

The 15 August is a more solemn occasion. Tradition takes over with an open air mass at Thiers square (10.30am) followed by a blessing on the sea and a parade of boats. For the occasion, sailboats, pinasses and motorboats are decked out in all their finery, decorated with large shields and yellow flowers.

Numerous activities take place throughout the day*:
